Val Kilmer, the versatile actor known for his iconic roles as Jim Morrison, Batman, and Iceman, passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed the cause of death as complications from pneumonia, following his recovery from throat cancer diagnosed in 2014.  

Kilmer’s career was marked by both leading-man stardom and compelling supporting roles, showcasing his range and talent. He made his film debut in “Top Secret!” (1984) and quickly rose to prominence with his portrayal of Jim Morrison in “The Doors” (1991). He also took on the mantle of Batman in “Batman Forever” (1995).

However, Kilmer’s career wasn’t confined to leading roles. He delivered memorable performances as Iceman in “Top Gun” (1986) and its sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022), Doc Holliday in “Tombstone” (1993), and in ensemble films like “Heat” (1995) and “The Ghost and the Darkness” (1996).  

Known for his enigmatic personality and unpredictable nature, Kilmer often drew both admiration and controversy. His dedication to his craft was evident in his roles, and he was praised for his ability to make every line sound like an improvisation.

Off-screen, Kilmer’s reputation for eccentricity and occasional conflicts preceded him. Yet, he also forged strong friendships and left a lasting impression on those who worked with him.

Born in Los Angeles in 1959, Kilmer’s early life and career were marked by significant events, including the tragic death of his brother and his acceptance into Juilliard at a young age. He also had a diverse stage career, appearing in Broadway productions and Shakespearean plays.

His personal life included a marriage to actress Joanne Whalley, with whom he had two children. He also pursued various artistic endeavors, including writing and performing a one-man play about Mark Twain.  

Kilmer’s later years were marked by his battle with throat cancer, which he documented in the 2021 documentary “Val.” The film, narrated by his son Jack, offered an intimate look into his life and career, earning critical acclaim.  

Despite his absence from mainstream Hollywood for a period, Kilmer remained a respected and influential figure in the film industry, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and a complex, multifaceted personality.
